Figure 1: Woman with Tattoo Lino-cut by Ben Lau 2006

Woman with Tattoo.jpg
Today’s art in discussion is “Woman with Tattoo.

The way to appreciate such a “beauty” is not in asking how much sex appeal
the “woman” can send out to you, but rather, how sexy are the lines and forms
with which the metaphor has been orchestrated as though through the magic wand
of a wizard! In this instance, the calligraphy is powerful!
Our intuition always find the calligraphy enjoyable
if it really exists. Without a doubt, the calligraphic excellence,– the poetic essence
in any given work of art, plays an important hand in our assessment of the art’s
merits.
Andy Warhol’s “Marilyn Monroe”, for example, cannot claim to
pass that test because it is just the illustration of an idea. Its
lines, forms and colors are the result of a shabby patch-up. Even as an
illustration, they are weak, impatient and life-less!
Once you have removed the picture from its context (i.e. Warhol’s theories, beliefs
and what not,) the work simply falls apart. It has never been able to stand on its own feet in the first place!
Intuitively, we find Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe neither poetically transcending nor spiritually uplifting. Now further removed from the feverish crime scene of post-modernism, the work has sadly become like a sail that has lost its wind, or a puppet just snuffed out of its breath with the removal of the puppeteer’s hand.

All illustrations with the claim of fine art tagged to their frames share the same fate–the fate of well-deserved oblivion!

I am not saying that a postmodernist is necessarily an impostor, I simply ask a viewer to use his/her intuition to determine if something claimed to be a work of art is indeed so.

Therefore, I propose this to be our rule of thumb:
True art is timeless. Its existence is independent of the beliefs of its author. True art exists completely in its own right and of its own merits, not as a tool to illustrate someone’s “artist statements!”
When someone comes to you with something claimed to be edible,
would you not first examine that claim and then the “food item”?

Is art not the food for the soul? Should we not be extremely careful about the claim as well as the “food item” itself?

In Woman with Tattoo the tension created from the push and pull of
opposing lines is obvious to all–as is the geometric groundwork behind the composition–as though all the elements in the field are locked in place with a
mathematical perfection that approaches magnificence. Nothing in the composition
can be seen isolated or unresolved.
What is its contribution in mainstream art?
It can be seen in this light: through rich calligraphic
background and energy, the artist has succeeded in recycling
or reinventing the LINE in mainstream Art.

One invention particularly worth noticing is the
outlining of the figure’s breasts in one single great
stroke–an ecstatic way to create a woman’s swelling
teats!

It may be a generalization to say that woman is the
most beautiful thing in the universe for man, but to
create poetry in art, nothing can take the place of
woman.

Reportedly Cezanne was a shy man and he
turned to the vegetables for his expressions.
But WHAT VEGETABLES!

It is not surprising then to see the artistic genius Knox Martin turns to
the woman’s body for inspiration– true to his name of
a gallant lover!
